Introducing a comparison feature simplifies decision-making, reducing fatigue and helping users navigate 7.7 million listings more efficiently.

As Airbnb grows to 7.7 million listings in 2023, users face increasing difficulty in choosing accommodations. They often compare an average of 10.9 listings and spend over 160 minutes browsing. Without an easy way to compare options, decision fatigue sets in, and Airbnb risks losing users to competitors. My project aimed to introduce a unique comparison feature to simplify decision-making, reduce frustration, and enhance overall user satisfaction on the platform.

#01

The lack of a comparison feature makes the decision-making process time-consuming and frustrating.

Applied Methods: Desk research, User interview, competitive analysis, Persona, StoryBoard.

DISCOVER & EMPHASIS

Decision fatigue is a major pain point for users, especially during group trips. Introducing a comparison room feature presents a clear chance for Airbnb to differentiate itself, filling a gap competitors have overlooked.

“How might we enable users to evaluate accommodations more quickly and easily?”

The Room Battling concept was adapted by users for its simplicity and fun.

Applied Methods: Brainstorming, Crazy 8, Prototyping, Concept testing.

PRODUCT DECISION

I evaluated 22 ideas generated through brainstorming and Crazy 8 exercises, then conducted concept testing with two selected concepts by using wireframes. Based on the results, I adopted the "Room battling" concept.

The task success rate improved by 50% through the two cycles of iterations.

Applied Methods: Hi-fi Prototyping, Usability Testing.

ITERATION

I conducted two rounds of usability testing with 4 Airbnb users. Through the iteration phase, task success rates improved by 50%, and error rates were reduced to zero.

#04

The room battle feature streamlined decision-making, helping users quickly and confidently evaluate listings by key factors.

#05

This fast-paced 10days sprint made time management a challenge and a great learning experience.

TAKEAWAY

While I effectively managed my time during the research, define, and ideate phases, the design phase highlighted areas for growth, particularly in interaction design. The pressure to complete within a tight timeframe underscored the importance of improving my design skills to produce high-quality work more efficiently.

Despite the time constraints, I successfully conducted two cycles of iterations, which helped refine the product and provided valuable insights.

This experience reminded me how important it is to keep sharpening my skills and adapt quickly to fast-paced environments.
